The 14-track Revolver tops the UK chart, produced, as ever, by George Martin at Abbey Road. Showcasing the group’s expanding and experimental creative drive, its closing track Tomorrow Never Knows signals a further departure from the three-minute pop song formula, including the use of backward tapes and sitars. Cover art has been created by band friend, Klaus Voormann.

During tonight’s show at the Cleveland Municipal Stadium 3,000 of the 24,000-strong crowd storm the stage resulting in a 30-minute break and the quartet taking refuge in a back-area trailer. The performance resumes after police and a local disk jockey plead with the fans to return to their seats. Extensive damage is caused to the infield, at a venue which normally hosts the Cleveland Indians baseball team. (In a perfect moment of schadenfreude, radio station KLUE in Longview, Texas, which yesterday organized public bonfires of Beatles records, is knocked off the air when a lightning bolt hits its transmission tower, causing extensive damage. The station’s news director is reportedly knocked unconscious.)
